Web Crossing server licenses are designed with the following purposes in mind:
With that in mind, Web Crossing is licensed by the amount of activity that a site generates, in units of daily page views.
Basically, a page view is a single dynamic page served by Web Crossing. NNTP messages are counted as 1/10th of a page view for each message transferred. And chat messages are counted as 1/100th of a page for each chat message transferred.
For example, if you have a 5T Web Crossing server, licensed for 5,000 page views per day, this is equivalent to either 5,000 web dynamic page views, or 50,000 NNTP messages or 500,000 chat messages sent to or from the server, per day.
It works out like this: If you have a chat with 10 people in the room, one message sent out to those 10 people counts as 11/100ths of a page view total. The message from the user coming IN to the server is 1/100th; the ten messages going OUT add up to 10/100ths more. Newsgroup traffic is figured similarly (but as 1/10th pageview).
As of Web Crossing 5.0, email and static pageviews are unlimited
These numbers are tracked in the Usage Counter in the Control Panel.
See the Sysop Docs for information on the grace period for page view overruns. You will be notified by the Web Crossing server if your page views exceed the license limits.
To track your page views and calculate partial page view contributions from email, news group, and chat activity, look at the Control Panel > Usage Counter.
The Usage Counter is nested - when you click on the Guided Tour, hotlinked in Figure 1, you are shown a list of the subfolders in the Guided Tour and their count. (See Figure 2). Clicking on the hotlinked subfolders gives you access to counts for the individual discussions inside.
The Usage by service section tracks only daily and monthly stats; the usage by location tracks continuously until the numbers are reset manually with the link at the bottom of the page.

All Web Crossing servers (but not Web Crossing Express) can run as mirrored servers in a source/mirror configuration, with Web Crossing providing round-robin routing for load balancing. A single license allows you to run unlimited numbers of mirrored servers for a single cluster.
All Web Crossing servers allow for unlimited numbers of users and database content, within the limits imposed by the server's operating system.
All Web Crossing servers allow for unlimited numbers of simultaneous conferencing, chat and other TCP/IP sessions, within the limits imposed by the server's operating system. A single license allows you to run unlimited numbers of fanout servers for load balancing your chat users and to achieve efficient handling of huge numbers of participants.
All Web Crossing servers allow full use of Web Crossing Template Language and Server-side JavaScript for all your Internet development projects.
Each server is allowed to exceed its license limits a maximum of 10 days. After exceeding license limits 10 times, the license limits are enforced. The sysop is sent warnings when license limits are exceeded, giving ample time to upgrade the license.
A note for Web Crossing hosting customers: All WCI hosted sites run on Enterprise servers. Separate licenses are not required for hosting customers. For hosted sites, page views are calculated a bit differently, to take into account bandwidth usage:
Page View Equivalents for Hosted Sites are calculated as follows:
*
a dynamic page is a page served from Web Crossing's database (forum
message pages) or a page served from Web Crossing's scripting
languages (custom application).
** a static page is a page served from files outside the Web Crossing
database (files in your html folder). Graphic images are cached
and are typically served just one time per browser session.
Purchasing and Installing Licenses
You can purchase additional licenses for your Web Crossing server from your Web Crossing authorized dealer or directly from the main Web Crossing site in your region: http://www.webcrossing.com (main site) or http://www.webxjapan.com (in Japan).
You will be issued your license upgrade by email. To install your license upgrade, simply paste the special license number for your site in Control Panel > Install a Server License. (If you're upgrading, it will say "Install a New Certificate" at the bottom of the page, in the Site Management section, instead.)
Upgrading does not affect your current content in any way. You can try out and develop your site using the free webx/1T server and then upgrade to a larger license and continue to use your current contents.
Upgrading a Server with an Older License
Users with old licensing arrangements can stay with their old system, or switch to the new, when upgrading to a newer version of Web Crossing. Email sales for more specific information.
Current users can also switch over the new licensing system and take advantage of unlimited users, messages, chat licenses and distributed serving by just paying the difference in cost between their current licenses and the new licenses (receiving 100% credit for their old licenses).
